If you're planning a caesarean birth, or preparing in case one becomes necessary, having a well-packed hospital bag can make all the difference to your comfort and confidence.
When to Pack Your Hospital Bag for a C-Section
The NHS advises having your hospital bag ready by 36 weeks, whether your C-section is planned or you're preparing just in case. It’s helpful to pack with your birth partner so they know where everything is - and have a separate bag for labour/admission day and another for your hospital stay.
Essentials for Admission Day
Here’s what to bring with you when heading into hospital for your C-section:
- Hospital notes and ID
- Birth plan, if you have one (yes, you can have a birth plan for a C-section!)
- Glasses/contact lenses
- Your own pillow
- Hair tie or headband
- Lip balm
- Slippers or slip-on shoes
- A phone and charger
- Headphones or something to listen to while waiting
A light dressing gown or cardigan can also be helpful if you’re waiting for surgery in a shared bay.
Clothing for Recovery
After a C-section, you’ll want loose, breathable clothing that won’t press on your incision area.
- High-waisted, supportive knickers
- Loose pyjamas or nightshirts
- Front-opening tops for breastfeeding and skin-to-skin
- Comfortable going-home clothes (think soft joggers or a maxi dress)
- Non-slip socks or slippers
C-Section Recovery Essentials
1. Maternity Pads
Bleeding (lochia) still occurs after a C-section, so you’ll need the same super-absorbent pads used after a vaginal birth.
2. Peri-Wash Bottle
Movement can be difficult after surgery – using a Post-Birth Wash Bottle can help you keep clean while movement may be limited during loo visits.
3. Breastfeeding Essentials
Breastfeeding after a C-section is absolutely possible but it may require a little more support due to positioning and movement.
- Nursing bras or bralettes
- Nipple cream
- Breast pads
- Supportive feeding pillows (if you’re bringing your own)
- Colostrum if you have it (ask your midwife how this can be facilitated)
Lansinoh® HPA® Lanolin Cream – 100% natural nipple care
Lansinoh® Disposable Breast Pads – stay dry and comfortable day and night
Toiletries and Personal Care
You may be in hospital for 2–4 days, so it helps to bring:
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Face wipes and moisturiser
- Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
- Deodorant
- Hairbrush and clips/bands
- Maternity sanitary pads
- Towel and flannel
- Water bottle with a straw (easier post-op)
- Earplugs and eye mask (wards can be noisy)
Essentials for Baby
- 3 - 4 sleepsuits and vests
- Nappies (at least 24)
- Wipes or cotton wool
- Scratch mittens and a hat
- Swaddle or blanket
- Muslin cloths
- Car seat for going home
For Your Partner or Support Person
- Snacks and drinks
- Phone charger
- Pillow and change of clothes (if staying)
- Toiletries
- A camera (or phone) to capture first memories
Midwife’s Top Tips
- Pack high-waisted pants to avoid pressure on your scar
- Use hydrogel pads after 10 days for gentle, soothing recovery and protection
- Practice breastfeeding positions like laid-back or side-lying to reduce strain on your core
- Keep items like your phone, water bottle, and pain relief within easy reach
- Don’t hesitate to ask for support - from feeding help to scar care, your midwives are there for you
Packing for a C-section doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. With the right items in your hospital bag, you’ll feel more confident and comfortable, ready to welcome your baby with focus and calm.
